WWII Letter Project

I began the WWII letter project after I discovered letters that my Uncle Bill had written to his mother, my grandmother, during WWII. The result was the 2015 release of the Bill Banis story which is available on this website. Bill served in Europe and was KIA in Italy.

In 2016, we added my uncle Albert’s WWII story. Abe served in the US Army Infantry. He was on the beaches of Normandy and fought in France before being captured and spending months as a POW in a German Stalag.

In 2017, the WWII story of PFC Bill Nance, my father, will be added to this site through weekly installments beginning Memorial Day. Bill served with the US Army Infantry in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was at the war front for more than three years and fought on the Solomon Islands of New Georgia and Bougainville. Bill participated in the invasion of the island of Luzon and the liberation of the city of Manila.

Their stories are common to those millions of American GIs who served in WWII – people who sacrificed much and sometimes everything to save the world. Most are gone. Their voices are silent. We must not forget them.

I hope this site will provide a link for present and future generations to those heroes of the Greatest Generation.
